Interview With Moguai
This week, along with the release of his first sample and loop library, we have the pleasure to exchange a few words with the German progressive house guru and founder of the Punx Label - Moguai. Hit play to hear the demo song from his release with Loopmasters.
Where did the name Moguai come from?
Many years ago my older sister had an architecture project in Barcelona / Spain. The project was to create a club in this fantastic city. She called the project „Moguai“. I liked the name so much, that my artist name was born!
When did you start DJ-ing and producing? How was it different then compared to now?
I started DJing 15 years ago! I think one part of the difference is, that years ago you could go to a club and play „electronic music“. Nowadays people are not that open minded like they were in the past. For example in east europe, you can play a night with a Drum & Bass DJ, and the people are absorbing every style the same way and the party does not stop.
Tell us about Punx.
PUNX is my own record label. We released the first single in 2001. It was my own single called „The Rock“. The second release was the ground breaking single „U Know Y“ of mine. We signed „Informatix“ and a lot of other artists. By end of the last year, I felt it was time for a change. That´s why I relaunched „PUNX“ totally in February 2009. Since then we had two strong releases and the next three in the pipeline. Including young and well known artists like „Kid Massive“, „Darwin & Backwall“ and „Big World“.
If you had the opportunity, is there a particular time in the past that you would like to visit again, due to the energy of the time, your youth or for any other reason?
I am very happy about the time now, because of so much creative output, but sometimes I am missing the old days like in 2001 or 2002. The electronic music scene was so huge and you could listen to electronic music in the radio or on TV every day. I think the present is a little different. What I like about the current scene is that there are so many young and fresh producers as well as inspiring DJ´s and creative people in the back.
How do you see the future of club music developing?
My feeling is that electronic music is becoming bigger and bigger again. Especially in Germany, my home country, all the festivals I played were massive and had grown in comparison to last years.
Is this sample pack you are releasing through Loopmasters your first commercial sound design release?
Yes, it is my first sample pack and I am very proud of it! I know Loopmasters a long time, because we checked it many times in our studio and it was always a good listen. High quallity and a big choice of different good sounds!
When you produced it, what was the most important software/hardware you used? What was your workflow?
I produced it with many different things. But the most important software I used was „Logic Pro“ and „Ableton Live“ and the hardware was „Access – Virus“, „Korg MS20“, „Roland – JX 3P“, and from „Waldorf“ the „Pulse“ and the „Microwave“.
Considering the amount of work that has been put into this audio collection, would you do it again?
Yes of course, because I think it is a very special way to give all the other producers and sound nerds some insight to your work. Hopefully I manage to inspire some other producers with these special sounds. We had a great time in the studio producing the sample pack but now i am looking forward to focus on my tracks again. Maybe I let you all watch over my shoulder again in the near future.
A good piece of advice for all the producers who will be using your samples, please…
Be creative and don´t use sounds every time the same way... there ares many options to create very special and different sounds from the samples on this sample pack!
