Loup Barrow - Performs the Cristal Baschet from Loopmasters is a unique collection of sounds centered around the Cristal Baschet, an acoustic sculptural instrument invented in the 1950s by the Baschet brothers. Played through friction on glass rods and amplified by metal and fiberglass resonators, it produces a sound world that is both organic, ethereal, and deeply expressive. The instrument is fully chromatic and spans approximately four and a half octaves, offering a wide expressive range from delicate high harmonics to deep resonant tones. All recordings were performed by Loup Barrow, a musician, composer, and sound explorer specializing in rare acoustic instruments and extended techniques.
From performing before the Maharaja of Rajasthan and appearing live on Chinese television, to standing at the edge of the Arctic Circle escorted by orcas, filming for a British television series, and sharing the stage with the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Paris before an audience of 70,000, Loup Barrow has always carried a single, profound intention: to share his music and forge an intimate connection with his audience. His journey is both artistic and spiritual, pushing him to the outer limits of his own being and of the universe.
His encounter with the unique instrument known as the Cristal Baschet was a turning point in his life and career. In 2005, he met the Baschet brothers, visionary electro-acoustic pioneers of the 20th century and inventors of the Baschet instrumentarium and the Cristal Baschet, a masterpiece of their work.
Loup immediately became deeply attached to this “crystal organ” and has since devoted himself tirelessly to mastering this rare and little-practised instrument, developing his own sonic identity within both classical and contemporary repertoires. As a composer, he recently recorded his latest album, Immineo, with a symphonic orchestra, further expanding the expressive range of his musical world.
Since the passing of the Baschet brothers, Loup has continued to honor their legacy by bringing the Cristal Baschet to life through original works, performing at festivals and events around the world. With more than 2,000 concerts across 25 countries, fully aware of carrying a still largely unknown French instrument onto the international stage, he works passionately to expand its global reach and to develop new musical collaborations in France and abroad.
Loup Barrow - Cristal Baschet explores the full sonic range of the instrument, textures, and glassy sustained tones to more raw, resonant gestures and experimental articulations. The goal was to capture not only the purity of the sound but also the physicality and nuance of performance. The recordings were made using high-quality close and ambient microphone techniques to preserve both detail and spatial depth. Multiple mic positions were used to capture the direct excitation of the glass rods as well as the natural resonance of the instrument’s structure. Minimal processing was applied in order to maintain the authenticity and dynamic range of the original performances.
In detail, you’ll find 1.59 GB of 24-bit 44.1 kHz WAVs - 118 Crystal Pad Loops, 10 Crystal Atmos Loops, 36 Crystal Drones, 31 Metal Hits, 24 Long Crystal Pad Hits, 24 Tonal Metal Hits, 15 Evolving Serene Pads, 12 Effects, 10 Evolving Crystal Pads, and 5 Crystal Shimmer Atmospheres.
The collection is designed for composers, producers, and sound designers looking for distinctive organic textures, cinematic atmospheres, and unusual harmonic material that stands apart from conventional sample libraries.
